On Growing as a Dancer

Sometimes dancers are prematurely concerned with how their dance style looks. In this dance there are no flourishes as important or elegant as the structure of the dance itself. One learns to explore this with a beautiful quality of motion and then one is a tango dancer.

Combine dance technique with the music's imaginings.

Today we hunger for a tangible connection in our daily lives. Whether we work in a cubical, an assembly line or a huge laboratory, our fragmented existences seem to cry out for something as fundamental and immediate as this sensual dance. It’s encompasses both intimacy and anonymity which seems to be the perfect foil to our daytime activities. As this is a social dance we prepare dancers with the skills to be comfortable leading and following many styles of the dance. With this base my hope is that dancers will create their own tango within this open-ended framework.

The discovery of this dance should be a fanciful and exhilarating experience.

On Leading and Following

Both leaders and followers lead and follow. They listen to the train of thought of the other and become good at counterpoint and responsiveness.

A sensitive follower can influence the dance with her quality of movement as well as her musical annotations in embellishment and gesture. Leading is not only initiating the movement but also following the follower’s reception of it through. You are following her following you.

This is how the dance feels connected. The most important thing is the interplay between initiative and a bit of surrender to the music and to your partner. You develop a common will.

Music

Here is a list of some of the many available CD’s which have a clear walking beat for the beginning Tango dancer. They are suggested for this reason and because they are not very fast and also include a lot of music which is played at the Milongas.

They are all mainly Instrumentals unless otherwise indicated. They are available through many of the resources listed and sometimes at HMV, Tower records and world music catalogs.

Shoes

“The AnaLinda Sol line at Teddy Shoes has received rave reviews by the Boston tango community!!!

The line has now expanded to include unique styles, which are dressy and elegant. There are more sizes available as well.. If you have a black practice AnaLinda Sol and are ready to move up a notch in your dance confidence or you need a reward, come see and feel the difference these shoes can make in your dance!”

Beginning Tango dancers need not purchase shoes immediately. Choose a shoe from among your comfortable collection with smooth leather soles and that stay on without slipping at the heel.

Both men and women could benefit from a jazz flat or a dance sneaker.

Shoes For men:
Not too bulky

Shoes for women:
Avoid a sling back or a heel that is too high. A flat or a heel of 1 ½” or up to 2 ½ “ would be similar to what you would social dance in so is ideal for getting comfortable on your balance. It is often a good idea to alternate in your practice between a flat and a heeled shoe.

When you find yourself spending many hours in classes and practicing then it is time to buy a practice dance sneaker or jazz flat and possibly a dressier Tango shoe with a higher heel.
